About FEM93

What is FEM93?

FEM93 stands for Film, Education, Media 93, aims to increase access to creativity for the people of the North East

We aim to help with access, opportunity and well-being we would like to help the creative people of the North East of England to create films, plays, scripts and other creative endevors.

The hope is that everyone involved will get something out of these projects, showreel content, IMDB Credits, experience for CVs and access to professionals for advice and help as well as training workshops for creative people here to build confidence to give the tools needed to progress in these fields and practise their craft.

What will FEM93 provide to the community?

FEM93 aims to provide access to training, workshops, resources, mentors and professionals to help build creativity and creative opportunities in the North East.

In addition, we hope to build a community of like minded creatives in this area, allowing people to collaborate, build projects and productions together, communicate, give and receive feedback and work together, providing not only a creative outlet for people to experiment, learn and build their skills, but also a social outlet with like minded individuals.

Why have we put this project together?

The North East especially has seen cuts to funding in arts-based education.

We are approaching a time when only people with money will be in a position to study and be creative. This will be a devastating blow to the arts in the UK, as some of the most creative people reside here in the North East.

Why focus on The North East?

The issue in the North East is that people here are predominantly working class and as a result opportunities to be creative are not afforded to them.

Arts in education is being stripped away from public schools in favour of academia which is not appropriate in all cases.

Standardisation of education now means that if you aren’t academically gifted you miss out. There should be an equality of opportunity and a parity of esteem given to both academic and vocational subjects which encourages people to thrive in whatever area best suits them.

There is a lasting impact on young people who are made to feel like failures because they cannot achieve results in standardised tests. The impact on mental health is certainly, an area we are concerned with.

Having a creative outlet is a great way to improve mental health issues

It is vital that the lack of creative opportunities in the North East is addressed because we need to create equality of opportunity for the citizens of the North East and not lose talent to the south.  This could bring money and tourism to the North East if we succeed in giving creatives the chance to shine.
